HEALTHCARE‑ASSOCIATED INFECTIONS 

A MAJOR PROBLEM The World Health Organization cites HAIs as the most frequent adverse event in health care delivery worldwide. Many HAIs are preventable through the use of proper hygiene practice and tools, however, on average 452 people daily acquire an HAI, primarily due to poor compliance to hygiene practices.

INFECTION RISK IN THERAPY IS REAL 

In a random test, we swabbed the internal aspect of the face hole of five therapy beds from five different clinics. Four of those beds were covered using a terry towelling bed cover, together with an x-cut or round-cut paper-based head sheet; the fifth bed did not use any type of bed cover and used a paper towel as the headrest barrier. Results showed:

1/5 Was positive for rhinovirus (the common cold). 

2/5 Were positive for Staphylococcus aureus — one of which was antibiotic resistant (MRSA). 

5/5 Showed non-harmful bacteria, including skins cells and skin flora

SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN TO REDUCE BACTERIAL TRANSMISSION

The bacterial filtration efficiency of the Purifas FaceShield has been tested by an independent laboratory to international standard ASTM-F2101, which is utilised on products such as disposable surgical masks. The test method delivers an aerosolised liquid suspension of Staphylococcus aureus to the filtration media at a constant flow rate of 28.3 litres per minute. Results showed the FaceShield can reduce bacterial transfer by an astounding 40%.

CLINICALLY PROVEN TO REDUCE BACTERIAL AND SALIVA TRANSMISSION

To test the effectiveness of the FaceShield in reducing the transmission of both bacteria and saliva a clinical trial was developed and performed by an independent microbiologist from Macquarie University in Sydney. 

The trial found: 

• The FaceShield reduces the number of bacteria by an average of 84%.

 • With every single subject, saliva was transmitted to the internal aspect of the face hole, when the  FaceShield was not used. 

• When the FaceShield was used, no saliva was transmitted during therapy. 

• There is no evidence to show that antibacterial wipes are more effective than the FaceShield.
